I was at an event in Singapore when one of the church team ladies walking me to the hospitality room asked me, “Why do you think God speaks to some people through words of knowledge and doesn’t through others? I have never heard one.”
I love that question! I believe we all have the capacity, but it has to be developed, and we need fathers and mothers to tell us not only that we can do it, but that we can start now!
I looked at her and said, “Pray with me for a friend at home right now; she is going through the hardest time in her life.” We stopped and prayed, and then I asked her, “What is one thing you think God really loves about my friend that is unique?”
She thought about it in a prayerful way for a minute and asked, “Does she love comedy?” I laughed out loud because that would be one of the main things God would say about her! It is one of her favorite stress relievers and a secret passion of hers she wants to pursue at some point. “Yes, she does. You just got a word of knowledge. How did you feel while you were getting that?”
She said, “I had a thought that her love of comedy was God’s way of helping her through bad stress during her hard time, but I could feel that the thought wasn’t mine.”
Exactly. This woman, who’d never got a word she could identify as a word of knowledge, got one on a walk to a hospitality room on her first try, along with a prophetic word. This is truthfully how easy it is: if you can wrap your faith about why and what, you can get the who—God himself—and he’s speaking to you.
I’M WRITING A BOOK TO ACTIVATE PEOPLE IN THIS BECAUSE IT’S FUN, AWESOME, AND NECESSARY
God Secrets is coming! It is our new book about words of knowledge, one of the most unexplored, misunderstood spiritual gifts. I want to give you an excerpt from the workbook we are writing to go along with the book, to entice you toward this amazing gift!
Why Words of Knowledge–Biblical Promises in Them
Words of knowledge help us connect to what is in God’s heart in a real-time way, connecting us to not just the principles, but the person of God. Colossians 2:3 says “In whom [Christ] are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (NIV). We have moments of revelation as to the treasures of wisdom and knowledge in him, and those words of knowledge help us to treasure who Jesus is and apply his nature to our everyday lives.
The word translated as “wisdom” in this verse is sophia, which is the knowledge of how to regulate one’s relationship with God. It is wisdom related to goodness. This also speaks of one who is prudent spiritually with others and knows how to regulate circumstances spiritually. He or she is skillful, an expert, sensible, judicious. This is the same word Paul used in 1 Corinthians 12:8 when he was talking about words of wisdom: “To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom.”
The word “knowledge” in Colossians 2:3 is gnosis, which in this context means to know experientially. It is present and fragmentary knowledge as contrasted with a related word, epignosis, which is more of a clear and exact knowledge, knowledge gained through education or participation. Gnosis is more of an intuitive knowledge demonstrated in a present moment. Again, this is the same word Paul used in 1 Corinthians 12:8 when talking about prophetic words of knowledge: “To another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit.”
Scripturally, to “know” someone in a biblical sense was to have deep intimacy, even sexual intimacy, with him or her. That’s how Bible translators translated the word “know” or “knowledge.” Getting a word of knowledge isn’t about gaining information, it is about having intimate knowledge of the mind of God.
God is a god of justice, and words of knowledge help us to see what God is doing now. One of the clearest pictures of social transformation and God’s protection over his people, happening outside of the norm, was in the life of Daniel. Daniel and his young friends were given spiritual knowledge and understanding of literature and learning (Daniel 1:17). They had natural and spiritual knowledge downloaded into them that helped them advise the king. Daniel even interpreted the king’s dreams through words of knowledge, and the whole course of his life and his people’s destiny were secured.
If you could have the knowledge inside someone else’s head downloaded to your own, how much would his perspective, life experience, and understanding affect your own? We can literally get a transfusion of God’s mind and knowledge in an everyday way as we seek to know what he is thinking and what he cares about.
God is releasing spiritual words of knowledge so people can know his thoughts about themselves and the world around them.
